Herzog Ernst I. von Sachsen-Altenburg hatte den Prachtbau im Stil der Neorenaissance zu Füßen des Residenzschlosses von dem Architekten Otto Brückwald errichten lassen. Persönlichkeiten wie die Hofkapellmeister Friedrich Wilhelm Stade, Georg Göhler oder Eugen Szenkar, die Sängerin Josefa Back, Regisseure wie Wieland Wagner, der in Altenburg erstmalig die Ring-Tetralogie inszenierte, oder Peter Konwitschny gingen in die Altenburger Theatergeschichte ein. Seit 1995 wird das historische Gebäude vom fusionierten Fünf-Sparten-Theater Altenburg Gera bespielt.Anlässlich des 150.
