Die Eröffnung des Herzoglichen Hoftheaters am 16. April 1871 in der Residenzstadt Altenburg gab dem bis dahin bereits reichhaltigen, auf eine vierhundertjährige Tradition aufbauenden Theaterund Konzertleben wichtige neue Impulse. Herzog Ernst I. von Sachsen-Altenburg hatte den Prachtbau im Stil der Neorenaissance zu Füßen des Residenzschlosses von dem Architekten Otto Brückwald errichten lassen. Persönlichkeiten wie die Hofkapellmeister Friedrich Wilhelm Stade, Georg Göhler oder Eugen Szenkar, die Sängerin Josefa Back, Regisseure wie Wieland Wagner, der in Altenburg erstmalig die Ring-Tetralogie inszenierte, oder Peter Konwitschny gingen in die Altenburger Theatergeschichte ein. Seit 1995 wird das historische Gebäude vom fusionierten Fünf-Sparten-Theater Altenburg Gera bespielt.Anlässlich des 150.
