The Ancient Wisdom of Our Ancestors Returns

Once the mind has been stretched by a new idea, it will never again return to its original shape.
Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr.
“No cash? No problem!” Can this be real? How can it be possible? Can you truly have “cashless transactions?” The answer is yes—if you are prepared to adopt a new mindset and start to think about paying for the goods and services that you need with goods and services that you already have in your possession and have already paid for! Or basically return to the ancient practice of barter trade—or trade, for short—which is a concept that predates money. The answer you have been looking for is right under your nose and in the palm of your hand. You have just not made the connection.
Welcome to a new type of bank that trades in a whole new type of currency.
Although we have been conditioned to think that cash is king, it is not really true. What really is king are the products, services, skills, and talents you have that can be traded for products and services you may need. The only reason that we have “cash” as you know it today is for convenience and to make trade universal across borders. And the only reason you have an attachment to cash is not for what it is, which is really just paper or coins, but for all the goodies that cash can buy for you! Or what cash can do. But you can do the same transaction without cash. If you have inventory or products that are going to waste, you can trade these for something you may want or need, versus trashing them. Some folks call this recycling; others call it optimization, or going green. Either way, it is smart to take something that has no value, or shortly about to have no value, and convert it into a valuable asset, or something that you may need or want and can use immediately.
We agree that you may not be able to control the economy, but you can certainly learn to take advantage of it. And in today’s economy where cash is short, barter thrives, as barter is the only way to get what you want without exchanging any cash.
Savvy investors have known for a long time that down economies are a perfect time to make money, and nearly 60 percent of the Fortune 500 companies were founded in recessions. Apple, Microsoft, Disney, and Charles Schwab all have their roots in down economies; they were able to see opportunities and invested when others were fearful.
In the same way, barter allows you to take advantage of our current economic condition and to thrive and prosper in it. How can this be? Because barter trade’s roots lie in tough economic times.
Barter will allow you to finance your transactions without ever having to go to the bank, offering any securities, or showing any credit history. There is a tremendous gold mine today for creative people who are prepared to think outside of the box and are seriously willing to look at barter as a creative finance tool for their business, or even their personal life.
When you think of barter, you may think of a farmer paying a doctor in chickens for their services, which is most probably how it all started. But barter has evolved today into a real art and is used extensively not only by individuals, but also by highly successful businesses and even nations to overcome the problem of weak currencies. For example, today every major Western government has a department of trade and industry. And many third-world countries survive by trading commodities with other nations.

“Don’t worry, the first 30 years of farming are the hardest.”
There are thousands of trade clubs that exist around the world that we will soon be talking about, each which trades millions of dollars of goods and services daily. Even Amazon will trade with you! You can trade your old books, electronics, and other items for an Amazon gift card! Just visit www.amazon.com/trade. So barter is happening every day around you as we speak, and we hope this book will open up your mind and imagination to a whole new way (or, really, old way) of doing commerce that is now back on the rise!
Trade today is a highly sophisticated and advanced creative financing tool that is both known and used by some of the most successful and well-known business enterprises and entrepreneurs around the world—household names that you would recognize immediately. Companies like Sheraton, KLM, Best Western, TWA, Samsung, and NBC use and have used barter as part of their business-building strategies.
This all leads us to the real secret to creating wealth in your life or business, which is:
If you don’t have money, you invest your time. If you don’t have time, you invest your money.
Most conventional books on finance are about investing your money in the stock market, real estate, or other investment vehicles as a wealth-building strategy. This also is a book on finance, but creative finance—for situations in which you don’t have money to invest! In these cases, you invest your excess time, talents, and inventory.
Although you may think that barter trade is no longer used or may even be primitive, you will shortly see how so far from the truth this really is. We assure you that barter trade today is alive, well, and flourishing as a highly advanced form of commerce. Barter trade clubs use highly sophisticated software and operate just like banks. Today you can do virtually anything you would normally do with cash on trade, or without cash!
Most merchants that take or offer trade have a trade logo from the organization or trade club they are a part of, shown at their place of business. You may have not noticed them. They look similar to Visa or MasterCard logos.
Bottom line: trade is not only back in style but on the rise, and it is your turn to catch the wave.
In life we make money by solving other people’s problems for profit or pay: profit if we are in business, and pay if we are an employee. Barter is simply another vehicle for exchanging goods and services, and another way to solve each other’s problems.
The purpose of this book is to educate you on the power and potential of barter trade, and open your mind and imagination to what is really possible if you truly embrace it as a way of life, and adopt a new way of thinking about how to solve problems.
As Tom Peters, one of the world’s leading management consultants, says in his books In Search of Excellence and Re-Imagine! Business Excellence in a Disruptive Age, “Nothing is unimaginable.” We totally agree.
But before we start our journey together, let’s lay out the basics of barter or trade and remove what we believe is one of the biggest mistakes, misunderstandings, and even misconceptions that people have when it comes to trade: they think that barter is a oneway exchange, or maybe is free. Not true!
Barter very simply means that instead of paying for what you want with cash, you are exchanging value for equivalent value.
Barter is not rocket science. It very simply means that instead of paying for what you want with cash, you are exchanging value for value, which is your time, talents, or goods and services for other people’s time, talents, or goods and services. Barter doesn’t mean that you are getting stuff for free; you are simply exchanging value for equivalent value.
Two things need to happen for a barter exchange to work effectively:
1. You need to have something to barter—i.e., something that is valuable to someone else. You are not getting anything for FREE. You are just not paying for it with cash!
2. You must honor your portion of the credit when they come to redeem their portion.
The mathematical equation for barter is very simple: I give you x, and you give me y in return.
Regarding the first point, the mathematical equation for barter is very simple: I give you x, and you give me y in return. So, theoretically, x = y in barter. Both have equivalent value. And only when x = y can you say you have a “fair trade.” And the second part of the deal is that you must stand by the credit that you offer. For example, if you offer someone food at your restaurant for plumbing services, you must honor the credit you issued when they come in to eat. And likewise they must honor the plumbing services credit they gave you, when you need to fix that broken pipe!
Barter transactions require the highest degree of integrity.
Barter or trade is the way that our ancestors did business, and it worked for centuries. They knew the barter trade equation: x = y.

INSIDE SECRET #1

Life is about problem solving. Barter is a tool that allows you to solve problems without using any cash. Money—or cash, as we know it—is just a means of representing value. But this value can be just as equally represented directly with your products, goods, services, time, and talents!
The only reason that we use “money” or “cash” today is that it is both convenient and universal. This is a...
