Il libro raccoglie quattro studi su opere considerate generalmente "minori" della letteratura italiana dell'Ottocento (a eccezione delle Avventure di Pinocchio, recentemente "canonizzato" anche all'interno dei programmi dei concorsi per l'insegnamento di Lettere). Il filo conduttore è l'analisi del rapporto individuo-potere attraverso una lettura ravvicinata di alcuni testi che si possono considerare esemplari a proposito di tre fasi ben precise della storia italiana e della storia letteraria dell'Ottocento: i primi moti risorgimentali (Il manoscritto di un prigioniero di Carlo Bini); la costruzione dell'Italia postunitaria (Le avventure di Pinocchio di Collodi, Cuore e altri testi deamicisiani); la "questione sociale" di fine-secolo, legata agli effetti della politica crispina e ai movimenti di stampo socialista, anarchico e femminista (La folla di Paolo Valera, Gli Ammonitori di Giovanni Cena). Dal punto di vista metodologico si è cercato di analizzare i testi in una chiave il più possibile aperta e interdisciplinare ma con una certa predilezione per la lezione ermeneutica di Michel Foucault.
