Qui la fatica umana Ăš stata nel tempo capace di domare le loro acque con fragili argini di terra e di prosciugare con canalizzazioni le «zone umide» per ricavarne terra coltivabile.Questo libro concentra l'indagine su un periodo, tra 1450 e 1620, durante il quale massimo fu lo sforzo di uomini, tecnici, proprietari e governi per trasformare le terre basse in prati, risaie e terre da grano. A forza di braccia luoghi inospitali si trasformarono in un grande cantiere per creare terra coltivabile e nuovi insediamenti agricoli. Al centro della narrazione la fatica di migliaia di contadini, investimenti e conflitti di interesse tra Stati e comunitĂ  che unirono e divisero tecnici, proprietari e governi sull'una e sull'altra sponda del fiume.
