Engineering Geology

Proceedings of the 30th International Geological Congress, Volume 23

About this book

This volume focuses on the engineering geological and environmental problems of major engineering works, rock and soil properties, and protection of the geoenvironment and reduction of geohazards, reflecting the major achievements and advancement of engineering geological science and technology. It includes documents of the contributions of engineering geologists from various parts of the world, who attended the 30th International Geological Congress (IGC) held in Beijing on 4-14 August, 1996.

Abstract
The geological investigation and studies for the Three Gorges Project (TGP) have been lasted for more than 40 years, centering around such five engineering issues as dam site (dam region) comparison, regional stability and seismic risks, reservoir and environmental geology, damsite and structure foundation geology, natural construction materials. Through coordinated muti-discipline research including all the geoscience disciplines relevant to the engineering construction, and employment of state-of-the-art techniques in different periods, a comprehensive yet in-depth geological investigation and study has been carried out. As a result a wealth of reliable data have been obtained and great a many valuable experiences are summarized, which has made a great contribution to the development of relevant disciplines.
The TGP formally commenced to construction on Dec. 14, 1994 and the construction of major structures are now in progress smoothly. The understandings and conclusions reached in investigation phases are now under examination and the results will further enrich engineering geology in both theory and practice with the progress of the project construction.

A BRIEF ACCOUNT OF THE THREE GORGES PROJECT

Through almost half a century of repeated studies, justification and argumentation, the TGP was eventually approved at the Fifth Plenary Session of the Seventh National People's Congress in March 1992 and included in the ten-year plan of national economic and social development. The main characteristic indices are shown in table 1. With such a construction scale and technical scheme, the TGP has well dealt with the contradiction between the need and the possibility, and achieved the coordination and unity in efficiency, investment environment, resident relocation.
The TGP will have tremendous social and economic benefits. It can effectively control the upstream flood, as a result significantly improving the flood control capacities in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River. According to the adopted technical scheme, the TGP will have a total installed capacity of 18200 MW, yielding an annual energy output of 84. 68 billion kw.h. With such a high capacity and tremendous energy output as well as close-in to the load center, it is an optimum program to alleviate the electric shortage in such areas as the central China, eastern China and eastern Sichun province. After completion of the TGP, the navigation capacities of the Changjiang River the Golden Waterway will be increased greatly and the navigation conditions in the middle reach will be improved enormously. In addition, the TGP has other tremendous comprehensive benefits in development of aquatic product, irrigation and tourism resources; speeding up implementation of the program of shaking off poverty and building up a fortune in the Three Gorges area; and supply of water resources for the South-North water transfer project .(Fig.1)

HISTORY OF GEOLOGICAL AND SEISMOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONS AND STUDIES

Over 70 years have been passed since the earliest conception on the Yangtze (Changjiang) Gorges project was formally advanced by the pioneer, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen in his industrial plan "polices of national reconstruction," issued in 1919. In the past decades, in order to propose an advanced, economic and reliable construction scheme and blueprint of design, and to answer various concerns with the construction of the TGP raised by personages of various circles both in China and abroad, several generations of scientific and technological workers have made unprecendent studies centering around the scientific and technical problems relating to the TGP. And a wealth of results have been obtained, which as a result have not o...
