El 13 de marzo de 1741, el almirante sir Edward Vernon llega a las costas de Cartagena. Está al mando de una flota de ciento ochenta navíos, más de veinte mil hombres y tres mil piezas de artillería. La puerta del imperio español en América parece destinada a caer en las garras de la ¡segunda armada invencible!, enviada por los ingleses. Sin embargo, un general manco, cojo y tuerto decide hacerle frente a la situación. Durante sesenta y siete días, Blas de Lezo utiliza todo su ingenio y su determinación para evitar que la Ciudad Heroica caiga en manos de los ingleses.

A pesar de la hazaña, que termina con la expulsión de los asaltantes, el general español siente que la corona no lo ha valorado lo suficiente. Por esto envía su diario a España, para que el rey se entere de lo que la batalla de Cartagena significa.
