Estanislao Zuleta es considerado uno de los pensadores más importantes de la historia de Colombia. Fue autodidacta, abandonó el colegio en cuarto de bachillerato, y siempre estuvo en contra de la educación tradicional porque creía que limitaba las capacidades de los niños y los encauzaba en una senda conformista.
Para él, el niño es un pensador, un investigador, que se pierde en la repetición de datos inútiles. "La educación y los maestros nos hicieron un mal favor: nos ahorraron la angustia de pensar", dice en este libro. Esta formación crea personas que no piensan por sí mismas, pero son buenas para obedecer. Las ideas y la crítica que expuso Zuleta en este libro siguen vigentes porque el sistema educativo no ha cambiado demasiado.
