EI presente texto es uno de los productos de un proyecto de investigación aprobado por Colciencias y la Universidad del Valle, realizado entre enero de 2005 y abril de 2008 bajo el título de "La constitución histórica de los números reales en la perspectiva de la formación de docente". La iniciativa de producir este texto surge de la necesidad de proponer a la comunidad de educadores matemáticos de secundaria y universidad de la región una opción complementaria para el tratamiento de los números reales a nivel escolar. Específicamente se plantea la posibilidad de incorporar, desde una visión amplia del campo de la educación matemática, las dimensiones históricas, epistemológicas y filosóficas relativas al concepto número real, dentro del conjunto de posibles estrategias que permitirían una mejor apropiación de dicho concepto tanto de los profesores en general como de los estudiantes de la educación media y primeros años de universidad. El carácter interdisciplinario de este trabajo de investigación está respaldado por la participación de dos grupos de investigación: el grupo de historia de las matemáticas y el grupo de. Educación matemática, ambos de la Universidad del Valle.
