Sonnenflucht" ist der dritte Roman aus dem vierteiligen Epos "Die Kinder des Sisyfos" über die Geschichte der Bundesrepublik Deutschland zwischen 1968 und 1989. Dessen erste Bände "Ein Frühling irrer Hoffnung" und "Zwielicht" sind bereits erschienen. Schöfer schreibt eine literarische Geschichte von unten. Seine Protagonisten gestalten ihr Leben aktiv, sie leisten Widerstand und denken in die Zukunft. Kritiker sehen diese Romane in der Tradition von Peter Weiss ("Ästhetik des Widerstands") und Uwe Johnson ("Jahrestage"). Die Romane Schöfers sind phantasievolle und sprachmächtige Erzählungen aus einer auch heute noch wirksamen Vergangenheit. In "Sonnenflucht" treffen wir erneut Schöfers Hauptfiguren Viktor Bliss, den unfreiwillig arbeitslosen Geschichtslehrer und dessen Freund, den Metallarbeiter Manfred Anklam. Der Betriebsrat Anklam hat sich auf den Weg in den Süden gemacht, um seinen heimatflüchtigen Freund Bliss von dessen Ägäisinsel zurück in die deutsche Realität zu holen. Auf der Rückreise, im Athen des Sommers 1980, treffen sie die Studentin Katina und erleben die Wirklichkeit des modernen Griechenland. Mit einem Telefonanruf holt den Betriebsrat Manfred Anklam das unwirtliche Vaterland ein und zurück. Bliss bleibt in Athen. Der Tod von Katinas Freundin Sotiria bei einer Demonstration in der griechischen Hauptstadt und das große Waldbrennen um die Stadt treiben ihn aus seiner existenziellen Verzweiflung.
