Der Begriff der Menschenwürde wird kontrovers diskutiert, denn oft stellt sich die Frage, ob der Mensch eine Sonderstellung unter den Organismen dieser Welt erhält. Wieso wird dem Menschen Würde zugeschrieben doch das Tier wird nicht in dem Maße gewürdigt? Die Bibelstelle im Buch der Prediger war der Impuls meiner Arbeit (Prediger 3, 21): "Wer weiß, ob der Geist des Menschen aufwärtssteigt, der Geist des Viehs aber abwärts zur Erde fährt?" Die Frage, ob Tiere eine Seele besäßen, fesselte mich. Häufig schreiben Menschen, darunter auch Theologen, dem Tier bloß die Funktion eines Nutztieres zu, doch ist dies mit den Versen der Bibel vertretbar? Nach kritisch-exegetischer Betrachtung einiger Passagen revolutionierte ich mein Verständnis über die Würde der Tiere. In der vorliegenden Arbeit werden empirische Ergebnisse aus der Verhaltensforschung berichtet und Bibelstellen werden exegetisch untersucht, um die Würde der Tiere wissenschaftlich-theologisch zu bestimmen.
