"Son muchos años los que este urbanista y escritor (¿o al revés?) ha dedicado al asunto, en medio de una vasta obra especializada. Sus libros me proponen siempre la misma pregunta, ¿hay algo que no haya leído Almandoz en cuanto al imaginario de la ciudad desplegado en la literatura venezolana? Seguramente, pero cuando creo estar a punto de reconocer un vacío se completa páginas después, y es que trabaja con la parsimonia y la prolijidad del investigador para quien todo puede ser de interés para ampliar, circundar, iluminar el objeto propuesto, y así, con una prosa detallada (y elegante) va poco a poco penetrando en los terrenos que ha decidido urbanizar literariamente. Los nombres de ensayistas, novelistas, cuentistas y cronistas saltan entre las páginas componiendo el retablo de la escritura venezolana del último tercio del siglo XX, pero no a modo de panorama o de recuento sino de voces que hablan desde la ciudad, y asimismo la ciudad –la polis, podría decirse– habla desde ellos. No es un crítico literario reescribiendo la literatura venezolana, ni un experto en ciudades describiendo a Caracas, ni un historiador recontando los tramos de nuestro pasado, ni un sociólogo estudiando la venezolanidad.
