Chapter One
Science in Our Age
Professor Albert Einstein once acknowledged, “The ideals that have lighted my way, and time after time have given me new courage to face life cheerfully, have been Kindness, Beauty, and Truth. Without the sense of kinship with men of like mind, without the occupation with the objective world, the eternally unattainable in the field of art and scientific endeavors, life would have seemed empty to me.”
We today live in a society dominated by science. We use microwave ovens, laptop computers, cellular “smart” phones that can double as cameras, cars with GPS navigation, wide-bodied airliners, innovative synthetic fabrics, and especially the Internet. All these advanced technologies of our modern day were acquired through the development and use of scientific principles.
Despite this, countless individuals today feel incredibly empty and hollow inside; they are searching for some sort of guidance to make their lives meaningful. Many folks who hold a firm conviction about the existence of God, though, are being aggressively told by “leading” scientists that there is no God! They may hold distinguished degrees and speak using terms most people simply do not understand. And the crazy part is that they base this on their own “Random Effects” Theory of Evolution. It seems to many believers we just can’t fight back.
Since most people don’t know science and scientific terms too well, I hope this book can provide some crucial ammunition to allow both scientific and nonscientific believers to profit from the important technical details I have included. Please, use any information or viewpoints I have provided here to address these topics to others. This is the strategic feature for why I wrote this book.
To argue with a scientist, you must think like a scientist!
This book, I sincerely hope, will serve to level the playing field for those of us who believe in both our scientific principles and our religious principles. I will endeavor to explain why so many of the significant scientific concepts we know today not only fail to discredit the Judeo-Christian Bible but are also capable of utilizing science to reinforce our religious beliefs!
First, I want to present a set of introductory terms that will be helpful as we go along. Variance is important to generally understand, and it means that something can change. Using these terms a bit loosely, in order to avoid even more difficult terminology, if data changes in a way that agrees with a specific theory or key concept, regardless of modifications, it is deemed to be “co-variant.” If it tends to disagree with a theory or concept, it is then considered to be “contra-variant.” If it is something that simply never ever changes, it is considered “in-variant.”
The use of co-variance by Professor Einstein (meaning that all physical laws must hold true regardless of what coordinates are used or substitutions made) was fundamental to his General Relativity Theory. He also needed another term, the “Equivalence Principle,” which we will discuss later, in general terms. The specifics of how gravity and acceleration, for instance, are “equivalent” are a bit beyond the scope of this book.
These terms can be seen to be important by what the great German physicist Wolfgang Pauli wrote here: “The generally Co-variant formulation (by Einstein) of the physical laws acquires a physical content only through the (Einstein-driven) Principle of Equivalence.”
As a college student, medical student, physician, military flight surgeon, NASA flight surgeon, ER physician, and military occupational health physician, I have received a fair amount of training in “the sciences.” In doing so, I was fortunate enough to be instructed by very knowledgeable mentors, including military technology experts, advanced systems specialists, pilots, astrophysicists, NASA astronauts, and sundry engineers who were authentic “rocket scientists.”
Through it all, I had many of these people who kept telling me—in various cases in an absolute and determined manner—that science was the new “leader” of mankind. They told me that there was simply no place for the ancient myths and outdated teachings about legends, traditions, and especially religion. They worked very hard to try to convince me and other believers that it is a crazy idea about there being a Supreme God who cares about each one of us.
The problem for me, however, was that I had been taught to read the Bible and have felt the touch of God in my life from my earliest memories. While I never gave up on the concept of God, it became harder and harder for me to keep believing in the Lord as it appeared, especially in college, that the “evidence” was piling up against my traditional beliefs. My faith began to waver, and I felt myself losing grip with the very fundamental beliefs that had previously defined my life and how I perceived it to be unfolding.
Then a strange thing happened, at least from the standpoint of the “scientific proof” I had been taught in school about the assured absence of God. As a medical student, I witnessed an absolute miracle from heaven for a patient I assisted in treating. From the perspective of everything that our sciences had taught me, the events I observed were absolutely and completely impossible!
That scientific belief in the impossibility of “spiritual” miracles has never managed to stop them from happening, however. Yet when a previously “impossible” event happens within the framework of science, we simply call it a “breakthrough.” There should be a type of equivalence between precipitous events!
As we go through the information, I hope to show how things that once seemed impossible (contra-variant) to normal human actions are now scientifically possible and in many cases are truly scientific fact. I will tell one story in the next chapter of a miracle that happened for a patient I was treating. Though I will skip the pertinent details for now, this one remarkable miracle reconfirmed to me that there is a God and He is the Supreme God of the universe!
For readers who may have little or no significant scientific training, I very highly encourage you to read this treatise anyway, but to simply skip any of the complicated parts that are not clear to you. I will need these terms, however, to get my messages across to any actual scientists who read it. I absolutely hope to reveal, through scientific evidence, that the Truth of the Creator was designed into the very fabric of universal space-time. This will then show that He cannot be ignored even in the twenty-first century!
Believe me, scientific theories are proven wrong much more often than they are proven correct, and much of what was viewed widely as scientific “facts” back in the 1830s and 1870s, up to and including some of the scientific “facts” believed to be true in the 1950s, 1970s, and even the 1990s, are presently recognized as being incorrect (thus being contra-variant) and have become discarded theories today. For instance, we are fairly confident today that the Earth is not flat and the Moon is not made of cheese.
Yet if we say we believe in God, the Creator of All Things, we believers are often viewed simply as silly and uninformed chumps that rely on ancient legends and religious beliefs that are without any scientific data or context. I hope that by providing key scientific arguments, to support what we have believed through faith, we can better defend ourselves and our children against some of the same science-based arguments that are being used to try to make us appear futile and inept. I hope this book provides all believers with a new confidence in God, even if you don’t quite understand everything I am writing about from a technical standpoint!
