Understanding your ASD child’s tendencies will guide your intervention.
Use your tools:
Visual schedule
School rules
Prompt/cue cards
Classroom rules
Behavior plan
Simple directions one or two words
Mindfulness
Expectations
Remember, go with the flow. Work with your student; be understanding, patient, kind, and positive.
What to expect? The unexpected!
Example:
  • Teacher: “We are having chocolate cookies today.”
  • ASD response: Today, he or she loves chocolate. Tomorrow, he or she never eats chocolate.
Respond positively: “Okay, great. No problem.”
  • Teacher: “We are going outside for recess.”
  • ASD response: Today, he or she loves playing in the sun. Tomorrow, he or she can’t go out in the sun.
Respond positively: “Wow! Great! We will play in the shade.”
