Understanding God and His Word

About this book

This book is designed to guide preachers and students of the Word to navigate the complex connection between the old and new testaments. The book specifically emphasizes identifying key truths. The material engages students in discussions, providing them the opportunity to ask questions, find answers and to solidify their Understanding of GOD and His Word. There are many important questions about God and His Word that we need to understand. As Christians, we know all the answers are in THE BIBLE. Nigel started writing this manuscript by answering the tough questions using the Word of God. It took him over ten years to write this material. He used the Catechism method (questions and answers) to make it understandable for everyone to read and comprehend. This material was taught as a course for the past thirty years, and hundreds of students have gone through the course.

The Second Tablet of the Law of the Law—Part 1
LESSON 8
The Second Tablet of the Law can be summarized using one scripture, “…you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” God wants people to be in right relationship with one another, treating others how you yourself would want to be treated. The Apostle Paul said, “Whenever we have opportunity, we should do good to everyone, especially to our Christian brothers and sisters.
THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT
  1. What is the Fifth Commandment?
The fifth commandment is all about the respect and honor we owe to our parents. Parents have been given authority by God to train their children in the faith of Jesus Christ. By teaching and godly example parents are given a wonderful opportunity to impact the lives of their children for the glory of God. Children are required to obey their parents in the Lord.
    Exodus 20:12
Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the LORD your God will give you.
  2. what does God require of us in tHIS Commandment?
    God requires us to:
    • Honor our parents with a sincere love and respect and regard parental authority as ordained by God.
    Ephesians 6:2–3
Honor your father and mother.” This is the first of the Ten Commandments that ends with a promise. And this is the promise: If you honor your father and mother, “you will live a long life, full of blessing.
    Leviticus 19:32
Show your fear of God by standing up in the presence of elderly people and showing respect for the aged. I am the LORD.
    • Serve our parents by happily doing practical things to help them especially when they are in need.
    1 Timothy 5:4
But if she has children or grandchildren, their first responsibility is to show godliness at home and repay their parents by taking care of them. This is something that pleases God very much.
    • Normally, we would say obey your parents in all things but there is one exception. We are not required to obey them if they call for us to commit sin.
    Ephesians 6:1
Children, obey your parents because you belong to the Lord, for this is the right thing to do. [KJV—obey your parents in the Lord.]
    Colossians 3:20
You children must always obey your parents, for this is what pleases the Lord.
    Acts 5:29
…we ought to obey God rather than men.
    BIBLICAL EXAMPLES:
Jesus was subject to Mary and Joseph—Luke 2:41–52
Jonathan disobeyed his father in order to spare David’s life. In doing this he chose to obey God rather than man—1 Samuel 20:31–33
    • Respect and obey those in lawful authority. It is important for us to understand that ultimately all authority comes from God. When God places people in positions of authority, He expects us to obey them. If we refuse to obey the authority of parents, church leaders, teachers, government officials, police officers etc., we are refusing to obey God.
    1 Peter 2:13–14
For the Lord’s sake, accept all authority—the king as head of state, and the officials he has appointed. For the king has sent them to punish all who do wrong and to honor those who do right.
    Proverbs 23:22
Listen to your father, who gave you life, and don’t despise your mother’s experience when she is old.
    1 Timothy 5:19
Do not listen to complaints against an elder [pastor] unless there are two or three witnesses to accuse him. [witness: A person who can witness to the fact—a person with firsthand knowledge.]
  3. what are the primary obligations of parenting?
The primary obligation of parenting is to care for the spiritual, physical, emotional and educational needs of each child in the family. Creating an environment whereby each child can thrive is an important factor in the Christian home. Bible truth should be taught and modeled by the parents’ godly example. Values such as integrity, honesty, sincerity, respect and obedience need to be consistently modeled by parents in the home. These values are better “caught” than “taught.” Teaching a child to love and serve the Lord Jesus Christ is of paramount importance. Parents need to know how to “play” with their children before they can “pray” with them. Parents should be prepared to administer age-appropriate discipline in a balanced m...
