The Numbers Proof

DOUBT. How do you prove the existence of God?

REASON. Evidence! Facts! Things with no other explanation! You know what they say—“When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.”

DOUBT. They? What bozo said that?

REASON. Sherlock Holmes.

DOUBT. Who’s he?

REASON. I like a literary person.

DOUBT. Whatever. No such evidence.

REASON. There is! Undeniable! To me, and to many, science now proves God.

DOUBT. You can’t prove God!

REASON. I can prove God three ways.

DOUBT. Banana peels. Give me a hint.

REASON. Every kind of animal has working code that is new and doesn’t resemble the code in any other kind of animal. You—

DOUBT. Back up. What’s code?

REASON. Instructions for doing something.

DOUBT. Like computer code?

REASON. Yes, or writing, or other systems for transferring information. Code can be letters, numbers, symbols, or even objects. Life uses groups of atoms.

DOUBT. Atoms? Cool. But so what? Just because different animals have different code, that doesn’t prove anything.

REASON. It does. You can’t get new, unrelated, unique working codes by chance. The codes couldn’t have evolved by accident. They were designed, by God.

DOUBT. Supposing, just pretend imagine fantasy supposing that were true, what would it prove?

REASON. There is a God. Every kind of animal was designed.

DOUBT. No way! Like you’re telling me each was designed? Like some super transcendent intelligence designed every creature on Earth? Ha!

REASON. That is exactly what I am saying.

DOUBT. Why would I believe that?

REASON. Because science—observation, experimentation, and reasoning—proves it’s true. There is no other explanation. New working code in different kinds of animals—code that doesn’t resemble any other working code—is positive evidence of God. You can’t—

DOUBT. Don’t believe you.

REASON. Doesn’t matter what you believe! Here’s another quote. “The great thing about science is it’s true whether or not you believe in it.”

DOUBT. Who said that?

REASON. Neil deGrasse Tyson.

DOUBT. The guy on the Cosmos series?

REASON. Yes.

DOUBT. He’s an atheist! He said that to smack religion!

REASON. He did, but it destroys his atheism. The facts prove design, and it doesn’t matter whether you believe in God. Science proves there is a God. There is no other explanation.

DOUBT. You can prove God three ways?

REASON. Yes! I heard you like numbers, so let’s start with the numbers proof. It’s not hard. No formulas. I will use numbers to prove the code used to build every kind of animal was designed by God.

DOUBT. You’re crazy. And don’t try to sneak anything by me. You just made three claims, not one. You need to prove each. First is all life runs code. Second is you can’t really get new working code by chance. Third is every kind of animal has working code that is new and unique, that doesn’t resemble the code in any other kind of animal. You need to prove all three.

REASON. Brilliant.

DOUBT. Did I get that right?

REASON. Brilliant. Couldn’t have said it better myself. Absolutely brilliant. I am in the presence of a genius.

DOUBT. People say I’m like Einstein.

REASON. Could be your hair.

DOUBT. Your first claim is stupid. Computers run code, not life.
