Chapter 4
Letâs Get Spiritual
Well. That was the â50s and â60s. What about the â70s, â80s and â90s? Letâs share testimonies. You first. What are some of the highlights you remember of the â70s, â80s & â90s. that impacted you as a Christian? I asked her.
One good thing that happened in â69 was when America landed a man on the moon. It gave hope to America that if we put our minds and ambition into something. Anything is possible. Which set a precedence for the seventies, to think outside the box. If you can dream it, you can build it.
Youâre right about that I said. Just ask Walt Disney, Sam Walton, Bill Gates and Donald Trump how that worked out for them, in their pursuit of the American dream
One sad thing I noticed was about what you were saying about the gay community coming out of the closet. Our heavenly Father broke a seal and a curse was sent forth to punish them. We called it an AIDS epidemic. They tried to treat it medically, but it was a divine curse and every Christian American knew it.
I knew it. I said.
Well, there was Desert Storm in the early â90s. A war to help our middle east allies against an invasion from Iraq. But it didnât last long. We got in, took care of business, and got out. Thatâs the way you should fight a war. I said. It sent a message out to the Middle East. If you mess with Americaâs allies and affairs, youâre going to get your butts kicked, to put it nicely.
Then there was the disco music craze sweeping the city and everyone wanted to be a yuppie entrepreneur. Pursuing wealth and material things for happiness. But most got burned out on coke and lost it all.
I remember the disco phase, I really enjoyed the music and upbeat style, good dancing music. She said. Hats off to the Bee Geeâs for stayin alive, and yes, the coke epidemic sweep the land like a blizzard. Destroying many relationships.
I have to confess, I bought into the yuppie scene myself. Unfortunately, I saw a lot of them lose everything they worked for because of the blizzard. The only ones that made out well were the dealers and the dancing girls.
That reminds me of my first marriage back in â77 when my wife of three years. Left me for a drug dealer. I guess my hard working lifestyle was too boring. At the time I was heartbroken, and felt like a failure as I watch my first attempt at the American dream walk out the door. I was so distrait that I was sitting in my pick-up truck contemplating how I was going to kill myself because the pain in my heart was so strong. I gave up and just wanted to end it all. I was at rock bottom again.
What happened? she said.
You probably already know, donât you?
I heard your cries that night. she said.
Tell me then what happened next.
You know what happened. It was the first time I heard the Lord speak to me audibly. I heard His soothing voice clear as a bell. He said. If youâre going to throw your life away. Give it to Me and see what I can do with it. Then a peace came over me.
Well, that freaked me out. A couple days later, I shared my experience with my Jewish Christian accountant. He said that the Lord was calling me. He led me into the Sinnerâs Prayer, and I bowed my knee and submitted my life to Jesus.
That night I was taking a shower, and the glory of the Holy Spirit filled my soul from my head to toe. It was like a heat wave overcame me and someone turned on the light in my spirit. I heard His soft voice again. All He said was, I love you. I started looking at things from a different point of view, with a peace I couldnât understand. Nothings been the same since.
I remember that night. she said. Father God said. Rejoice everyone. My prodigal son has found his way home. Yes. I knew what happened that night, as well as all the angels and saints in heaven and earth.
Really! I said. I didnât think I would have made that big of an impact in the spiritual realm.
Oh you did. she said. Tell me more.
Well, as most I people. I couldnât get enough of the Bible. I was eating it up like candy. Funny thing about that one is I tried to read the bible before, but I just couldnât understand it. I remember a time of baby grace when everything started turning around in my favor. I wanted to know everything I could about this superhero called Jesus Christ, the Son of God, more powerful than Superman. Thatâs when things really started getting spiritual.
What happened next? she said.
Well; I was talking to a coworker about the Lord, and he invited me to a home prayer meeting that some of his friends were putting together. Through that small group of friends we explored the kingdom of God and opened doors to a number of spiritual experiences. Then I joined their church in the early â80s and it turned into an adventure Iâll never forget. Especially the night we built a float for the local light parade and I portrayed Jesus as the king sitting on His throne. While the others dressed like angels danced to worship songs on the lower platform. His glorious Holy Spirit came down so strong I knew He was right there with me. Boy, did we rock the town that night. I wonder why we donât have a parade honoring Jesus at Easter, after sunrise service. I can imagine a parade where each local church enters a float depicting a part of Christâs ministry. Then gathering at the community park with worship bands playing and a bar-be-cue to celebrate Christâs victory.
Tell me more. This is interesting. she said.
Well hang on to your crown princess, âcause this is where it starts to really get weird.
What happened next? she said.
I had an unexpected visit from someone I didnât want to meet. I was lying in bed and everything was fine. All of a sudden, I got a chill in my soul and a fear overpowered me. I was frozen stiff and couldnât move or talk. Then the bedroom door opened and two Doberman pinchers came into the room. One on each side of the bed. They got right up to my ears and started growling. I really started freakinâ out, but I couldnât move.
Then he walked into the room. He was dressed like in a tux and well groomed. He had this kind of a Count Dracula thing going. He started laughing and shouted out loud. This is your chosen champion, a burned out hippie. He laughed even louder and said good luck with that. With all I had in me, I spiritually cried out to Jesus, âHelpâ. Then he motioned to his two minions and they left. That was the first time I met Satan face to face. I was scared to death and took me two days to shake off the fear. The whole time thinking, what did he mean by that.
Yeah, that sounds like something he would do. she said. We all know him well down here on earth. We just try to avoid him and his minions.
I wish I could of, after that I was getting demonic attacks from a variety of dark spiritual beings. It was on...
