I frati guerrieri del Tempio erano anche potenti banchieri ed abili diplomatici: come poté il sovrano francese distruggere il più prestigioso ordine monastico-militare del Medioevo?Le sistematiche ricerche condotte sulle fonti processuali hanno portato alla luce risvolti inediti di quella che resta ancora una fra le vicende più oscure della storia dell'Occidente: il Tempio cadde anzitutto per un attacco partito dal suo interno, ad opera di potenti gerarchi che vennero adescati dal re di Francia Filippo il Bello e convinti a tradire il Gran Maestro. Un rituale d'iniziazione militare che si era infiltrato fra le tradizioni dell'ordine venne stravolto e sfruttato dal giurista regio Guillaume de Nogaret per costruire l'accusa d'eresia. Il pontefice Clemente V comprese che i Templari non erano dissidenti in materia di fede e fece il possibile per salvare l'ordine, ma il vero intento del sovrano francese era in realtà quello di destabilizzare la Chiesa di Roma e fu necessario sacrificare l'ordine del Tempio per evitare uno scisma.
