Si pubblicano qui le lettere dal carcere inviate da Lucio Lombardo Radice (1916-1982) alla madre e alle sorelle tra il 1939 e il 1941, dopo l'arresto e la condanna da parte del Tribunale Speciale per aver partecipato a un gruppo di opposizione di giovani comunisti e antifascisti. Oltre a rappresentare una testimonianza di alto valore etico-politico, le lettere documentano la centralitĆ  della "scuola del carcere" per la formazione politica di Lombardo Radice e le sue future scelte di vita di scienziato e di docente universitario, di dirigente del PCI, per il suo impegno per la riforma della scuola, il dialogo con i cattolici, per la pace, il disarmo e un socialismo dal "volto umano".Le lettere costituiscono inoltre un ulteriore tassello dell'autobiografia di quella nuova generazione antifascista che si andĆ² formando direttamente in Italia negli anni Trenta, tra l'apogeo del regime fascista e l'incipiente disgregazione delle sue basi di massa.
