Maurice Barrès (1862-1923), né à Charmes (Vosges), est un écrivain et homme politique français, figure de proue du nationalisme français. Il multiplia les collaborations aux revues littéraires, et fonda la sienne propre, Les Taches d'Encre, très éphémère. Sacré "Prince de la Jeunesse", exaltant, dans les trois volumes du Culte du Moi (1888-1891), l'individualisme, la recherche des expériences et la satisfaction des sens, il fut à l'origine surtout apprécié à gauche, et plus particulièrement par Léon Blum. La publication des Déracinés (1897) puis de L'Appel au Soldat montre l'évolution de sa pensée vers le nationalisme républicain et le traditionalisme, avec l'attachement aux racines, à la famille, à l'armée et à la terre natale. Parallèlement à sa carrière d'écrivain, Barrès eut une activité politique importante. Élu député boulangiste de Nancy à 27 ans, il se voulait aussi socialiste et siégea à l'extrême-gauche. Il fonda l'éphémère revue nationaliste La Cocarde; il adhéra ensuite à la Ligue des Patriotes de Paul Déroulède, et fut antidreyfusard.
