Marcel Schwob (1867-1905) est un grand écrivain français. Il naît d'une famille d'érudits. Son père dirige à Tours «Le Républicain d'Indre-et-Loire», puis à Nantes, «Le Phare de la Loire». A sa mort en 1892, Marcel Schwob lui succède. Il est dans le même temps élève au lycée, où il gagne de nombreux prix d'excellence. En 1881, il se rend à Paris pour poursuivre ses études au lycée Louis-le-Grand. Il y rencontre Léon Daudet et Paul Claudel, et découvre l'un de ses modèles Robert Louis Stevenson, auteur de «L'Île au trésor». II poursuit sa carrière comme homme de lettre, et fréquente Paul Valéry, André Gide, et même Oscar Wilde. Il publie en 1894 «Le livre de Monelle», qui inspirera André Gide à l'écriture des «Nourritures terrestres».
