Poi ci fu tempo soltanto per i reattori del Vostok 1, l'astronave che avrebbe consentito al ventisettenne Gagarin di compiere un'impresa mai tentata prima: raggiungere lo spazio e – finalmente – riuscire a vedere la Terra dalla Luna. Tutto il mondo restò allora con il fiato sospeso, come dubitando che il figlio di un carpentiere si trovasse nelle condizioni di portare a compimento una simile missione. C'era in gioco, in quel momento, il senso stesso della Rivoluzione d'ottobre: un'aspirazione alla giustizia e all'uguaglianza che Gagarin racconta attraverso la sua stessa vita, dall'infanzia, trascorsa al tempo della resistenza contro l'invasore nazista e alla vittoria della «grande guerra patriottica», fino al duro addestramento riservato ai piloti dell'aeronautica, passando per la vita nel colcos e per gli studi preliminari all'ammissione nel Partito comunista. Una grande avventura dove in primo piano c'è l'uomo, le sue aspirazioni e i suoi sogni. Perché quello che è certo è che Jurij Gagarin – nome in codice Kedr (cedro) – riuscì a trovare la via del cosmo, riportando dalle orbite spaziali frasi di meraviglia e stupore destinate a restare famose per sempre: «Non c'è nessun Dio quassù».
