Diversamente da oggi, la città si caratterizzava per una certa promiscuità sia dell'abitare sia delle attività lavorative, ma muoversi per lavoro o per altre attività comportava scelte diverse. Il movimento intra-urbano era influenzato dalla presenza di forti poli di attrazione ma anche dalla sedimentazione storica della griglia viaria, con i suoi pieni e i suoi vuoti.
