The 7th, 8th, 9th, and 11th Georgia volunteer infantry regiments spent most of the Civil War fighting under Brig. Gen. George Thomas "Tige" Anderson in Gen. Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. Until now, no biographical roster of their members has ever been published. These Georgians saw it all, from the bloody battle of First Manassas through the ferocious combat of Second Manassas, Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and the long siege of Petersburg. They finally furled their banners at Appomattox. Nearly 5, 000 men passed through these four Georgia regiments. These rosters offer a long overdue record of these men. Each roster is organized by company in a simple and easy to use format. Entries feature full names (if known), promotions, demotions, casualties, transfers, and resignations for every rank—an unprecedented look into men and the structure and evolution of these organizations. They include the most comprehensive examination of the personnel originally enlisted and their subsequent service histories within these units in chronological order for the first time. Compiler and author Richard Allen has spent nearly two decades researching scores of archives and other sources to prepare these rosters. He utilized primary sources such as the Official Records, Compiled Service Records, newspaper accounts, diaries, letters, census information, burial records, and a variety of documents from both published sources and private collections. Students of the Civil War, genealogists, and enthusiasts of Georgia history will find these rosters invaluable. Everyone who uses them owes Rick Allen a hearty, and heartfelt, thank you.

Company Roll dated August 31, 1861 lists him as “absent by permission.” Admitted with typhoid fever to General Hospital, Warrenton, Va., October 5, 1861. Discharged for disability related to “natural delicate constitution and relapse of typhoid fever” November 20, 1861. Enlisted in Co. A, 53rd Georgia Infantry Regiment April 1862. (Born April 1, 1843. Died November 4, 1887. Buried in Adams – Atkins Family Cemetery, Henry County, Georgia.)

Allman, Emeriah F. Private July 30, 1861. Enlisted at Franklin, Ga., age 19. Residence/ Nearest P. O.: Franklin, Ga. Detailed to extra duty at General Hospital, Culpepper Court House, Va., October 27, 1861. Admitted to General Hospital No 1, Danville, Va., January 1, 1862. Company Roll for January – February 1862 lists him as absent sick January 1 – 18, 1862. Admitted with debility to Chimborazo Hospital No. 5, Richmond, Va., May 10, 1862, and returned to duty June 9, 1862. Severely wounded at Garnett’s Farm, Va., June 28, 1862. Company Roll dated October 31, 1862, lists him as returned to duty from wounded furlough October 25, 1862. Died of disease at Richmond, Va., October 10, 1863.

Almon, Hezekiah G. Private May 31, 1861. Enlisted at Atlanta, Ga., age 15. Residence/ Nearest P. O.: Franklin, Ga. Released from General Hospital, Culpepper Court House, Va., September 11, 1861. Detailed as nurse to General Hospital, Culpeper Court House, Va. October 27, 1861. Regimental Return of November 1861 shows him as absent sick. Muster Roll for January – February 1862 contains remark “Sent to hospital in August. Said to be detailed as nurse.” Company Roll for March – April 1862 contains comment “Returned to duty March 20, 1862.” Returned to hospital duty and detailed as nurse April 13, 1862. Muster Roll for November – December 1862 lists him as absent on hospital duty. Admitted with debility to C. S. A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, Va., February 8, 1863, and returned to duty March 24, 1863. Admitted with neuralgia to Chimborazo Hospital No. 2, Richmond, Va., March 25, 1863. Present at Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, Richmond, Va., April 1863 and transferred to General Hospital, Huguenot Springs, Va., April 15, 1863. Admitted with rubeola to Chimborazo Hospital No, 2, Richmond, Va., March 29, 1863, and transferred to General Hospital, Huguenot Springs, Va., April 12, 1863. Admitted with chronic rheumatism to C. S. A. General Hospital, Farmville, Va., July 15, 1863, and returned to duty August 25, 1863. Muster Roll for January – February 1864 show him absent sick from December 14, 1863. Roll or March – April 1864 lists him as returned to duty April 17, 1864. Admitted with chronic diarrhea and rheumatism to Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Va., July 30, 1864, and returned to duty August 29, 1864. Surrendered at Appomattox, Va., April 9, 1865. Severely wounded in right arm at Garnett’s Farm, Va., June 28, 1862. Muster Roll dated October 31, 1862, lists him as absent wounded. Muster Roll for July – August 1863 lists him as absent wounded from June 28, 1862. Discharged for disability due to “losing right arm” October 1, 1863. (Born June 26, 1838. Died December 6, 1908. General Hospital, Charlottesville, Va., August 17, 1861. Admitted with typhoid fever to C. S. A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, Va., September 12, 1861, and returned to duty September 24, 1861. Company Roll contains note “Returned to Camp Sept 26, 1861.” Killed at Garnett’s Farm, Va., June 28, 1862.

Barrett, John William. Private July 30, 1861. Enlisted at Franklin, Ga., age 20, occupation farmer. Residence/Nearest P. O.: Houston, Ga. Admitted with pneumonia to General Hospital No. 1, Danville, Va., January 11, 1862, and transferred to General Hospital, Richmond, Va. Severely wounded in jaw at Garnett’s Farm, Va., June 28, 1862. Admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, Richmond, Va., June 29, 1862, and granted 30 days medical furlough to Atlanta, Ga., from July 18, 1862. Medical furlough extended to 60 days and returned to duty September 19, 1862. Appointed 4th corporal October 15, 1862. Appointed 3rd corporal November 15, 1862. Reduced to private November – December 1863. Muster Rolls for May – June 1864 show him as absent sick from March 26, 1864. Beaty, Thomas R. Private July 30, 1861. Enlisted at Franklin, Ga., age 41, occupation merchant; description: eyes blue, hair dark, complexion fair, height 5 feet 11 inches. Residence/Nearest P. O.: Franklin, Ga. Discharged as over-age by provision of Conscription Act and furnished William M. Beaty as substitute, May 29, 1862.246

Admitted to Chimborazo Hospital No. 3, Richmond, Va., June 29, 1862, and granted 40-day medical furlough to Atlanta, Ga. Appointed 4th corporal November 15, 1862. Reduced to private September 1, 1863. Killed at Hanover Junction, Va., May 24, 1864.

Beck, John R. Private May 31, 1861. Enlisted at Atlanta, Ga., age 31, occupation carpenter. Residence/Nearest P. O.: Franklin, Ga. Appointed 2nd Corporal December 12, 1861. Appointed 4th sergeant January 29, 1862. Not reappointed to rank at company reorganization and reduced to private May 12, 1862. Killed at Sharpsburg, Md., September 17, 1862.

Admitted to General Hospital No. 1, Danville, Va., December 22, 1861, and transferred to C. S. A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, Va. Returned to duty from C. S. A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, Va., February 12, 1862. Company Roll for January – February 1862 lists him as absent sick from February 13, 1862. Roll for March – April 1862 contains remark “Sent to the hospital April the 24th, 1862.” Slightly wounded at 2nd Manassas, Va., August 30, 1862. Admitted to C. S. A. General Hospital, Danville, Va., September 6, 1862, and returned to duty November 3, 1862. Returned to duty from Jackson Hospital, Richmond, Va., June 17, 1864. Boggs, Andrew Jackson. Private May 31, 1861. Enlisted at Atlanta, Ga., age 27, occupation farmer; description: eyes blue, hair dark, complexion light, height 5 feet 6 inches. Discharged on account of tuberculosis at Winchester, Va., July 18, 1861. Enlisted in Co. A, 10th Confederate Cavalry Regiment in 1862. (Born October 15, 1833. Died October 11, 1911. Buried at Valley Grove Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Foster Crossroad, Randolph County, Alabama.)

Brimer, Thomas J. Private May 31, 1861. Enlisted at Atlanta, Ga., age 20, occupation farmer. Residence/Nearest P. O.: Houston, Ga. Severely wounded in both thighs at Manassas, Va., July 21, 1861. Admitted to Orange Hospital, Orange Court House, Va., July 23, 1861. Company Roll dated August 31, 1861, lists him as absent wounded. Company Muster Roll for November – December 1861 contains remark “Said to be at home on furlough from Hosptl. Not recovered from wounds in battle July 21.” Regimental Return of January 1862 shows him as absent on medical furlough. Company Roll for March – April 1862 lists him as returned to duty March 12, 1862 and returned to General Hospital March 27, 1862. Transferred from General Hospital, Orange Court House, Va., and admitted for treatment of “scalded foot” to C. S. A. General Hospital, Farmville, Va., March 28, 1862. Transferred from Chimborazo Hospital No. 2, Richmond, Va., to General Hospital, Camp Winder, Richmond, Va., May 4, 1862. Company Roll for May – June 1862 lists him as returned to duty from hospital May 15, 1862. Killed at 2nd Manassas, Va., August 30, 1862.

Wounded in right shoulder at Manassas, Va., July 21, 1861. Admitted to Orange Hospital, Orange Court House, Va., July 23, 1861. Appointed 2nd sergeant August 12, 1861. Brown, Thomas. Private May 31, 1861. Enlisted at Atlanta, Ga., age 21, occupation farmer. Residence/Nearest P. O.: Corinth, Ga. Appointed 5th sergeant September 2, 1861. Elected 2nd lieutenant September 16, 1861. Company Muster Roll for January – February 1862 states he died of acute meningitis at Camp Sam Jones, Va., January 18, 1862. (Born 1840. Bryant, George W. Private July 30, 1861. Enlisted at Franklin, Ga., age 18, occupation hireling. Residence/Nearest P. O.: Franklin, Ga. Discharged from General Hospital, Culpepper Court House, Va., September 28, 1861. Detailed as wagoner January 3 – February 17, 1862. Company Muster Roll dated October 31, 1862, contains following remark “Absent. Fell out of ranks at Rappahannock River Augt. 23.” Admitted for treatment of gunshot wound to hip to C. S. A. General Hospital, Charlottesville, Va., September 6, 1862, and returned to duty October 10, 1862.249 Company Roll for November – December 1862 lists him as returned to duty November 25, 1862. Admitted with rheumatism to Chimborazo Hospital No. 2, Richmond, Va., from February 22, 1863, and returned to duty April 11, 1863. Company Muster Roll dated August 31, 1861 lists him as absent at General Hospital. “Returned to camps” September 23, 1861. Appointed 1st corporal May 12, 1862. Reduced to private November 15, 1862. Company Muster Roll dated February 28, 1865, last on file, contains remark “Absent without leave from expiration of furlough Feby 3, 1865.” No later record.
