TUTORIALS: PENCIL SKETCHING

TIPS!

• If you prefer clean lines, do not use a pencil with a lead/graphite darker than an HB pencil, because darker leads are softer and smudge easily.
• Mechanical pencils make cleaner lines than wooden pencils, though the latter is better for shading in terms of output and control.
• Paper with a rough texture is best for sketching and pencil drawings.
• Never press too hard on the paper when sketching, even if you want dark, bold lines. If you press too hard, it will be impossible to erase, as the pencil will have made dents in the paper. You can always go over the lines again later.
• There are many different techniques for shading (see here).
• Use a blending stump to blend the areas where you hatched or crosshatched (see here).
• Never apply alcohol-based markers (such as Copic markers) over pencil lines.

SAMMY

Sammy is ambitious and outgoing. She loves to meet new people and spend time with them. Despite having a lot of friends, she tries her best to make them all feel important and cared for. She doesn’t like skirts but wears them anyway.

Materials

• Canson XL Mix Media paper
• HB pencil
• White plastic eraser
• Gray kneadable eraser

1 Using the pencil, draw the basic shapes of the head, neck, and torso, adding guidelines if needed. Sammy is facing forward. At this stage, remember not to press too hard with your pencil, as you will be doing a lot of erasing later!

2 Position the eyes and ears at a similar height. Add the arms, legs, hands, and feet, with her right arm bent up to her shoulder and her left arm held out from her side.

3 Sammy needs some hair and clothes. She has a thick, straight bob with sideswept bangs and a headband. She is wearing a scoop-neck shirt tucked into a short, pleated skirt with a ribbon belt, along with knee socks, platform Mary Janes, and a choker. You can erase some of the guidelines as you draw the clothes if they are getting in the way. Let’s give her a happy, smiling facial expression.

4 Our sketch is messy, so let’s use our erasers to clean it up. Use the white eraser to erase the guidelines as best as you can, then use the gray eraser to erase all the lines until they’re barely visible. Go over the faint lines with your pencil to refine them. Add any additional details to the hair, face, eyes, and clothing.

5 Add shading and details with the hatching technique to the undersides of the hair and shirt and to the cheeks, eyes, headband, skirt, and knee socks. Go over areas like the skirt and socks again, if needed, to make the shading even darker. Finally, add some short lines to the hair for shine.
