Cet ouvrage vient combler une lacune dans l'historiographie récente de l'exil américain, durant la Deuxième Guerre, des écrivains français, où le nom d'Ivan Goll est souvent absent ou réduit à une simple mention. Il arrive à Goll d'être rattaché par les travaux de l'Exilforschung à l'émigration de langue allemande, à un moment qui le voit pourtant délaisser l'allemand au profit du français et même de l'anglais. Puisant dans une vingtaine de fonds d'archives des deux côtés de l'Atlantique, la recherche menée a permis de placer Goll auprès de poètes américains et des surréalistes réfugiés à New York, dans ses tentatives d'établir des connexions avec les appareils de publication et la vie littéraire newyorkais. Parmi les lettres inédites retenues pour reproduction à la fin de l'étude, figurent celles expédiées lors du séjour de Goll à La Havane en 1940 à William Carlos Williams et à Louise Bogan, où la poésie de Goll (Parmenia, Jean sans Terre) et sa correspondance se complètent au contact de "fruits" "pleins de surprise" et de "femmes succulentes", non sans suggérer l'existence d'un tourisme sexuel sur l'île.
