The flat-faced toy of the Stuart court - and not, whatever the search results tell you, the Cavalier.
The King Charles Spaniel - A Complete Anthology of the Dog gathers breed chapters from the rare kennel literature of 1897 to 1935, among them H. W. Huntington's My Dog and I (1897), Arthur Craven's Dogs of the World (1931) and Stanley West's The Book of Dogs (1935). In 1903 the Kennel Club merged the King Charles, Prince Charles, Blenheim and Ruby spaniels into a single breed, and Edward VII intervened personally to keep the royal name - the argument these chapters were written around. In America the breed is known as the English Toy Spaniel.
Points, coat and colour varieties, temperament, celebrated dogs and their pedigrees are all set out, with the original photographs reproduced throughout.
