Avoid ‘Comparisonitis’

Every hero’s journey is unique, and so is every writer’s.
Constantly comparing yourself to other authors and publishers and their successes (#of books published, #of sales, income etc.) can not only be depressing, but also crippling. Comparing yourself needlessly with others can prevent you from doing the work you need to do, that you were meant to do.
Focus on your task and your work, and you will achieve your goals.
Odysseus did not wonder how Menelaus was doing on his way back from Troy with Helen. He thought of reaching Ithaca and nothing else.
Don’t worry about other authors and their journeys.
Focus on your own journey and, in time, you will achieve your goals.

2

Give Yourself Permission to Suck!

Rome’s first attempts at war were terrible, but they kept on fighting, training, and learning. Eventually, they became the best army of the ancient world.
The same goes for authors. No writer is excellent in their first attempt, but with learning, training and more writing, you improve.
Give yourself permission to suck at first, whether it is your first book or the first draft of your tenth book.
If you give yourself permission to not be perfect, you will free yourself from unreal expectation and numbing self-doubt.
My writing mentor’s advice is important here: Just get the story down. No matter what. Get it down!
Don’t worry about editing or perfecting the first draft, just keep writing to the end and don’t mind if it is awful.
Just get your story down and fix things later. After all, it’s better to have a rough but complete first draft of a story than two polished chapters.

No Book is Perfect

Historical novelist Bernard Cornwell once told a group of us in a master class not to overedit.
He was right!
Not only should you not expect yourself to write perfectly, you should not expect your book to be perfect.
No book is perfect!
Of course, you should always do your best and get help from editors and beta readers, but after that, just let your book out into the world to experience life and grow.

4

Put Your Writing First

Presumably, the reason you got into all of this is because you love writing historical fiction or historical fantasy.
In this modern age of publishing, it is easy to get overwhelmed and freeze up. Many writers are burning out.
For this reason, you need to take care. When you, as a creative person, are feeling overwhelmed with publishing and marketing, when you are feeling stressed and worried, just stop.
Take a breath.
Go back to what you love for a time: writing stories.
Put your writing first. It feels good.
It is also productive.
If it is the writing that is bringing you down, stop that and do something else. Exercise, or refill your creative well by visiting a historic site or museum. Watch historical movies or documentaries. Walk through a forest and connect with nature.
When something is getting you down, do something else that makes you happy.
Take breaks when needed and you’ll be more productive and ready to get stuck back into the melee.
