En Empatía con el traidor, Mark Polizzotti —el mismo traductor al inglés de autores como Flaubert, Duras y Modiano— pretende replantear el debate en torno a la traducción de una manera más fructífera que como se ha dado tradicionalmente, tratándola no como un problema que hay que resolver sino un logro para celebrar, algo, como decía Goethe, que es «imposible, necesario e importante». Así, tomando distancia de la disyuntiva entre la traducción como el pariente pobre de la literatura o el camino real hacia el entendimiento intercultural, a lo largo de estas páginas busca respuestas a las preguntas que considera en verdad más importantes: ¿cuál es el objetivo último de la traducción?, ¿qué significa catalogar una traducción de «fiel»? (¿fiel a qué?), ¿inevitablemente siempre se pierde algo en la traducción o podría también ganarse algo? Y, finalmente, ¿es importante la traducción y, de serlo, por qué? Empatía con el traidor, tanto un manual como un manifiesto, invita al lector a entender al traductor y a verlo no como un traidor, sino como el socio creativo del autor.
