Mission Agencies in Crisis?
About this book
Since William Carey first suggested the concept in the 1790s, missionary societies or mission agencies have been a feature of evangelical life in the UK. However, today, these societies find themselves facing challenges on a number of fronts. The 'centre of gravity' of Christianity has shifted dramatically. Many countries which were once considered 'mission fields' have seen an explosive growth in the number of believers, while in the UK, the constituency from which mission agencies draw their support has stagnated or declined. At the same time, our understanding of mission is changing as the experience base of the church broadens. This book examines aspects of the theology and practices of six mission agencies in order to understand the extent to which British agencies are equipped to respond to the crisis that confronts them. The study reveals a disconnect between the world of the mission practitioners in the agencies and the wider mission academy and suggests that agencies need to consider aspects of their leadership and governance if they are to respond effectively to the challenges they face.
