Die "Lebensbilder aus dem Bistum Mainz" richten den Blick gezielt auf Gestalten aus der "zweiten Reihe" des kirchlichen Lebens. Denn von dort aus wurden oft genug Ideen und Initiativen entwickelt, die das Bistum langfristig prägten. In Band II wird dies anhand von 14 Porträts deutlich, die nahezu die ganze Zeitspanne des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts abdecken. DarĂźber hinaus zeigen einige der vorgestellten Biographien auf, wie die betreffenden Personen aus ihrem christlichen Glauben heraus auch das allgemeine soziale, kulturelle und politische Leben ihrer Zeit mitgestalteten: Hier wären zum Beispiel die Vinzentinerin Adolphe Faust, der Pädagoge Heinrich Schrohe, der Mainzer Universitätsrektor August Reatz und die Journalistin Ruth Baron zu nennen. Das Porträt von Romano Guardini aus der Feder von Kardinal Lehmann ragt aus dieser Reihe hervor. Dieser Blick auf die Mainzer Zeit des groĂen Theologen kommt gerade recht zum Beginn des Seligsprechungsprozesses Guardinis.
