Nicht einmal der genaue Ort der Schlacht ist mit Sicherheit verbürgt. Die Ortschaft wird seit 1800 als "klassische Stelle" oder "historische Stätte" von Reisenden gesucht, besucht und beschrieben. Die Feierlichkeiten zum 700. Jahrestag der Schlacht am Morgarten im Jahr 2015 waren der Ausgangspunkt für dieses Buch. Silvia Hess untersucht darin nicht nur den politischen Gebrauch von Geschichte, sondern erstmals auch Morgarten als Fremdenverkehrsattraktion. Ein Besuch vor Ort wurde seit dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts mit Angeboten verknüpft, das historische Geschehen der Schlacht zu "sehen" und zu "fühlen", bis hin zur "Möblierung" der Landschaft zum Jubiläumsjahr 2015.
