Heinrich Zschokke war ein Pionier der modernen Schweiz und eine ihrer wichtigsten publizistischen Stimmen. Der Magdeburger schrieb schon als Jugendlicher Theaterstücke, kam mitten in einer erfolgreichen Karriere als Schriftsteller und Dramatiker 1795 in die Schweiz und verschrieb sich in der Helvetischen Revolution dem neuen Staat mit Haut und Haar. Zschokke fand seine Bleibe in Aarau, von wo aus er als geistreicher Autor, Politiker und Erzieher die ersten Jahrzehnte des jungen Kantons Aargau und der Eidgenossenschaft prägte. Er engagierte sich Zeit seines Lebens für eine liberale und sozialverantwortliche Gesellschaft und gab dieser Idee in seinen Zeitungen, Zeitschriften und Büchern eine machtvolle Stimme, die in ganz Europa gehört wurde.
