Lässt sich diese Erzählung auf einen einzigen Erzähler zurückführen, der einen charakterlichen Wandel Davids schildern wollte? Oder geben die Versionen in der Chronik und aus Qumran noch zu erkennen, dass eine vorisraelitische Tradition dahinter steht? Es zeigt sich, dass die aufgeworfenen Fragen nur durch die Verbindung von synchroner und diachroner Analyse geklärt werden können. Nach der Antwort auf die Fragen zur Entstehungsgeschichte werden das Gottesbild, die Bewertung der politischen Macht und der Zusammenhang von Schuld, Strafe, Sühne und Erbarmen beleuchtet.
