DRAWING FABRICS

I’m going to show you various ways of rendering fabrics. Each medium has its own qualities that work best for certain fabrics. Watercolors and pastels are great for fur, for example, but fat marker pens are not – although bright fun fur might look good rendered this way. Experiment to see what works for you.

CHECKS AND PINSTRIPES

Here we look at cloth used for coats and suits, such as tweed, plaid, herringbone and houndstooth. The patterns in these woven fabrics usually follow a grid, so pencil this in before you start your design.

HERRINGBONE

Pencil in a grid to use as a guide. With a fine-tipped marker pen, draw a diagonal line or two in each square.
In the next column draw diagonally in the opposite direction to create a mirror image. Just keep repeating this pattern for a herringbone effect.

HOUNDSTOOTH

Using a fine-tipped marker pen, color in alternative squares horizontally and vertically.
Draw a diagonal line in the blank squares in each vertical row.
Do the same in the blank squares in each horizontal row.

CHECKS

Use the same first stage as for houndstooth.
Fill in the alternative blank horizontal squares with diagonal lines.
On the vertical, draw diagonal lines in between the squares of solid color only.

Man’s checked suit

For this windowpane check suit, rough in the lines in pencil. Curve the horizontal lines downwards where they meet the edge of the figure. The exception to this rule is the right leg, which is receding from view, so the lines go up.

Woman’s pinstriped suit

When drawing pinstripes, take time to work out the direction of the stripes. The collars should be angled differently to each other and the jacket front.
Use a mid-grey marker pen for the fabric and a chalk pencil for the stripe.

CHIFFON LACE

Lace with a floral pattern on a fine net base can be beaded for extra embellishment. The fabric is drawn over a skin tone with soft crosshatching, or you could use the rubbing technique over textured paper.
