1 Deployment Models
Your organization must assess and select the model that best aligns with its human resources (HR) business and technology objectives. In this chapter, we’ll describe the main deployment models used and help you decide which deployment model to adopt. We’ll also provide an overview of the architecture and integrations required for each deployment model.
The digital transformation of HR in the workplace is essential to the survival of a business. Competition is fierce in the marketplace, and having the right talent in your organization is key to being competitive. Companies must be innovative in their HR solutions to support talent management, learning, growth, and performance strategies. Having the right strategies in place will encourage increased innovation and diversity in the workplace.
Being first to market, fast to respond, and efficient are all key elements to accelerate value, and many organizations have adopted cloud solutions to achieve these goals. Moving towards the cloud involves many different considerations because companies often have complex IT structures consisting of a mix of on-premise solutions and third-party vendors as well as in-house, custom, and digital cloud solutions.
Why the rush to the cloud? Simply put, the cloud offers plug-and-play solutions that can easily be adopted by users at reduced operational costs in IT and reduced complexity. The cloud can also be more reliable, enabling access from anywhere around the world, along with faster time to value.
Transitioning all HR functions to the cloud can be a company’s ultimate goal to achieve simplicity in back-office functions and frontend user access. With this goal in mind, SAP continues to heavily invest in cloud-based innovations. SAP is at the forefront of helping organizations of all sizes with their digital transformation journey to the cloud.
Realizing integration is key for achieving optimal end-to-end processes with other cloud-based and on-premise applications, SAP’s focus is on providing simple integration solutions, allowing you to adopt any of the cloud deployment options available to suit your business needs.
This book focuses on SAP’s cloud solution for human resources management, specifically SAP SuccessFactors and its related integration solutions to enable your business to manage its workforce effectively.
In this chapter, we’ll focus on the three common cloud deployment models: full cloud, core hybrid, and talent hybrid. We’ll provide detailed use cases, describing the modules and systems involved and helping you understand the solution’s architecture and integrations. We’ll also take a brief look at the side-by-side deployment model, which provides a consolidated view of a company’s workforce data in SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central while maintaining a system of record (SOR) both within the on-premise SAP system (SAP ERP or SAP S/4HANA) and the SAP SuccessFactors cloud platform. With this model, multiple integrations are available to connect SAP’s human capital management (HCM) systems into Employee Central although full sets of data must be stored in both systems, which increases complexity and maintenance costs. A few companies have implemented the side-by-side model, but most opt for a simplified approach: either the core hybrid model or the full cloud model.
Note
When we refer to the on-premise SAP system, we mean either the SAP ERP Human Capital Management (SAP ERP HCM) or SAP Human Capital Management for SAP S/4HANA (SAP HCM for SAP S/4HANA) solutions.
