16 Many suggestions are put forward as to the origin of the name Bulman. The British Hydrographic Office indicated that it may be attributable to the name of a crewman aboard Captain MacKenzie’s survey vessel in 1763. (Letter from Brian Thynne, National Maritime Museum, 29 December 2004.) This is incorrect as the name Bulman appears on charts from seventy years earlier.
