Information

1 Introduction

A leader in human resources (HR), payroll, analytics, and social collaboration software in the cloud, SAP provides a full range of human capital management (HCM) solutions that are suitable for organizations of any size, any industry, and any geography.
SAP SuccessFactors is SAP’s go-to solution for HR. It’s a multitenant software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that is hosted by SAP and licensed through an annual subscription. While the fundamentals of HR have not evolved much since the early days of electronic record keeping and manager approvals, today’s HR systems have moved toward being intelligent systems of engagement and automation that open up possibilities to provide HR processes and services not previously possible.
The SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite covers the spectrum of HR processes, including core HR, talent management, workforce planning, and analytics. Within core HR, SAP SuccessFactors offers a core human resource information system (HRIS), payroll, time management, benefits, shared services management, and wellness management. All of this is supported on a mobile application for smartphones and tablet devices.
Originally, SAP SuccessFactors had a particular strength in talent management and social collaboration, but in the past five years we’ve seen significant growth of SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central; in days gone by, customers tended to start with talent applications, but we’re now seeing a strong trend of customers starting with core HR before moving to talent. The suite’s range of talent management solutions covers all of the key process areas: performance management, recruitment, onboarding, compensation management, learning management, succession planning, and career development planning. The vendor-agnostic analytics solution has 30 years of experience behind it and provides more than 1,000 predefined analytics.
This book has seen many changes to the SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite of solutions, the adoption of SAP SuccessFactors, the market, and the ecosystem since the first edition was published back in 2013. At the time of writing (fall 2019), the SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite now handles in excess of 12 billion transactions by more than 100 million users at more than 6,500 customers in 26 different industries. More than 85 of these customers have more than 100,000 employees. SAP is implementing more than 2,000 regulatory updates per year and has upward of 19,500 pieces of predelivered content. These statistics speak volumes about the growth and adoption of SAP SuccessFactors.
In this updated and expanded edition, we’ll look at the latest processes and features released since the last edition of this book, as well as the updated user interface (UI) and new features like Intelligent Services, Digital Assistant, and Work-Life (focused on health and well-being). In addition, we have added content to show how SAP SuccessFactors applications can add value to your HR processes.
We’ll now take a look at a brief history of SAP SuccessFactors before taking a high-level look at the modules of the suite, SAP’s strategy and roadmap, and then a few core concepts of the system.

1.1 History of SAP SuccessFactors

SuccessFactors was founded in 2001 as an SaaS performance management software vendor. It quickly evolved its strategy to focus on providing “business execution” software and, thus, expanding its offering to cover talent management and analytics.
SAP announced its intention to acquire SuccessFactors on December 3, 2011, and the acquisition was formally completed in February 2012. SuccessFactors became “SuccessFactors, an SAP company” shortly thereafter, before eventually becoming “SAP SuccessFactors” as SAP’s family of cloud applications were given the “SAP” moniker before their name.
The acquisition was significant for SAP in a number of ways: it provided SAP with access to genuine cloud expertise and enabled it to offer a full cloud-based HCM suite. It also gave both ...
