LESSON 1

WHOLE NOTES AND WHOLE NOTE RESTS HALF NOTES AND HALF NOTE RESTS

Play the note A in Whole Notes below giving each whole note and each whole note rest 4 beats: (Remember your goal is to go from the beginning to the end with a slow EVEN beat.)

Play the notes A, B and C in whole notes below giving each 4 beats: (*See N.B. below)

Now try it in Half Notes and Half Note Rests giving each 2 beats.:

Play the A minor scale in Half Notes:

Play the C Major scale in Half Notes - LOW - (some Bass Clef instruments cannot play the first measure or below E) :

* N.B. Whenever you need to take a breath, ALWAYS BREATH FROM YOUR MOUTH. NEVER BREATH FROM YOUR NOSE ON ANY WIND INSTRUMENT.

LESSON 2

QUARTER NOTES AND QUARTER NOTE RESTS

Read the music below by giving each Quarter Note and Quarter Note Rest 1 beat.

Tap your foot to a beat but FEEL each and every beat inside of you. Keep your eyes ahead.

LESSON 3

THE EASYWAY SECRET TO READING MUSIC

THE SECRET TO READING MUSIC THE EAYWAY IS BASED ON “GROUPING” - THE ABILITY TO GROUP NOTES INTO PHRASES.

Read the music to LONDON BRIDGE below:

The most common mistake in reading music is looking at EACH NOTE SEPARATELY. In reading any music, including the music above, keep in mind that reading music is much like reading words in your language. When reading you form words and then put those words into groups, phrases and sentences.

For example, you don't read words this way:

Iwenttothestoreyesterday.

Nor do you read this way:

I   w   e   n   t   t   o   t   h   e   s   t   o   r   e   y   e   s   t   e   r   d   a   y

But when you group letters into words or phrases this way it becomes easy to read:

I went to the store yesterday.

The same holds true for reading music. You must learn to group notes while you are playing and reading music.

Try grouping a beat or two ahead. Then group a phrase or a measure ahead. Musicans who are excellent readers of music can group 2 or more measures ahead of what they are playing. By that I mean their eyes are 2 measures or more ahead of the notes they are actually playing.

But you must start somewhere so begin below slowly by staying at least 1 or 2 beats ahead of what beat you are actually playing:

LESSON 4

GROUPING

When reading the music below, try grouping the notes into lengths of about 2 beats or more. In other words, when you are playing the first note G your eyes should take in more than the note G. When you reach the second note G your eyes should be on the note E in the next measure. Continue in this manner to the end of the song.

LONDON BRIDGE

Gradually expand your ability to put notes into larger groups. Below is the same song London Bridge. But when you play it this time, try to see the notes in groups of 4 or of one bar phrases. By that I mean, when you begin to play the G in the first measure your eyes should be on the E in the next measure. When you reach the E in the next measure, your eyes should be taking in the measure that begins with the D in the third measure:

In like manner, try expanding your ability to group by looking at two bar phrases so that when you play the first two bar phrase, your eyes are taking in the second ...
