They need to know if those who are trying to join the herd are an asset to the team. If not, they are likely to expel them as a threat. Horses form strong emotional bonds with herd mates and are prepared to accept non-equines into the herd, similar to the way dogs will accept humans as part of the pack. We can learn from horses as we reconnect to our older mammalian brain, our instincts, and our intuition.
