Abstract

The relevance of student feedback to the quality of higher education institutes is highlighted in this chapter. Different student feedback formats and processes are reviewed. The importance of this process in enhancing the academic performance of the colleges is discussed in the Indian context. The popular feedback surveys are studied and their merits and drawbacks are mentioned. Student feedback data in electronic format is collected from a college in Andhra Pradesh, India, for 2019. The data is analyzed in light of the academic performance of the college. The study tries to find out whether the outcome of student feedback (SFB) provides the correct opinion of the students about the teaching-learning process of the higher education institutes (HEI). Results show that students have not given the true picture of teaching-learning of the institute. Possible reasons are discussed and suggestions are mentioned to make the SFB a relevant process in improving the academic grade and rank of HEI.

INTRODUCTION

National Assessment and accreditation council (NAAC) is the apex body to accredit the colleges and universities in India. The new NAAC procedures for the higher education institutes (HEI) pose a challenge in obtaining good grades and rank for the accredited and new institutes. Securing a better NAAC grade is a daunting task for the HEI in the changed scenario. The new NAAC methodology
of quantitative, qualitative metrics, digital validation, and verification of the data demands the full utilization of information and communication technology (ICT).
Job oriented courses and skill development programs through Jawahar Knowledge center have been introduced. Digital and virtual classroom teaching, and online learning management systems are arranged in the colleges. Entrepreneurial, leadership, and soft skills classes have been taught as a part of the curriculum. Despite these efforts, lack of employability skills, low rate of student progression to higher education, poor campus placements are the main problems faced by the present HEI’s in achieving good grades or rank. Students' opinion plays a key role in finding solutions to these problems (Abbot R.D., 1990).
The student feedback on teaching-learning experience in the classroom gave an insight into the difficulties experienced by the students. It paved the way for the teachers to use suitable methodologies for making learning an enjoyable experience.
Student evaluation through feedback is widely used in all colleges because of its ease and importance (Penny, 2003). It came into existence in the year 1970 (Galbraith, 2012). It is widely accepted that student feedback (SFB) is an important tool to find out the real reasons for the improvement of the college's academic performance (Ginns, P., 2007). It has been considered as an important part of the internal quality assurance cell (IQAC) in the institutes (Johnson, 2000). It is mostly used for formative as well as a summative evaluation of the institute (Arthur, 2009; Burden, 2008; Edström, 2008; Emery, Kramer, 2003). It is usually done once a year or semester. Students give their classroom exper...
