APPENDIX B - CHECKLIST OF WEB IMPROVEMENTS
Websites are more complex than ever; simple tools are not enough. Understanding which website issues are contributing to gaps in your company’s customer experience, discoverability, security, and manageability are essential for websites as part of your larger digital portfolios.
A comprehensive health check of a website is no small undertaking. The checklist that follows will provide seven forces that impact your site, including specifics you may review together as you think about improving digital experience for your customers.
Force 1: Security
Ensure your website is not vulnerable to attacks that can impact your data, revenue, and reputation.
- SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is in use on your site (all should have this, not only e-commerce sites)
- Everyone visiting your site is being forced over SSL to prevent unencrypted traffic?
- SSL is using current ciphers
- Your server is hardened for web services, especially if managed by your IT team or a VPS/Bare Metal server provider
- Your application layer is protected by a web application firewall
- Your application runs under its own user and has the right permissions on the filesystem
- Can resources be pegged by denial of service attacks?
- Web Software, Themes, and Plugins are updated regularly, so they are not out of date
- A trusted resource has access to the DNS settings and Registrar records
- Your user passwords for your content management system software are suitably strong
- Systems are in place to ensure protection from brute force password attempts
- Your web software is supported and has an upgrade path
