CHAPTER 1
Deception
TAKE HEED THAT NO MAN DECEIVE YOU
{Matthew 24:4}
Forty years ago while still in my teen years, I found myself in an extended visit to Southeast Asia. During my visit there I had the opportunity to experience the most amazing thing I had ever heard of, āSatellite TVā. BUT⦠The most amazing thing to me at that time was watching the news. Watching our Commander in Chief, President Nixon in his famously commanding position with raised arms and both hands producing the āVictory Signā, stating comments about the American presence there and what āhas notā and āwill notā happen there. As I watched that news report, and being an eye witness to the contrary of his statements, the meaning of the word DECEPTION started to take root in my mind at a whole new level.
All of us, at one time or another, have fallen victim to minor deception as little white lies and as much as full blown all out blatant lies, and perhaps we have even been party to such things.
However for myself, I think that was one of the first major āAH HAā moments in my life that opened my eyes and the light started to come in.
I was raised in a small Central Washington agricultural town with values somewhat different of those of larger cities. I was taught that people of higher standing such as Policemen, Politicians, Doctors and Lawyers were people of integrity and honor and could be trusted. As you may have noticed within that list, titles such as Pastors, Ministers and all manners of clergy have been omitted, after all they are representatives of God and above question.
Now I am not at all saying that these positions and titles are in anyway associated with any level of lack or corruption, after all we are all first just people. You know, I have heard it said that we are all products of our environment, we each have our own story that has been developed by the impressions that life has left on us. Of course, I have also heard it said that we are not judged by the sins we have committed, but by the amount of light we have rejected.
DECEPTION
The Revell Bible Dictionary describes that word as; misleading, lying, or promise breaking.
When Eve tried to avoid blame for the first sin, she said, āThe serpent deceived meā (Gen. 3:13) That word comes from the Hebrew root nashaā, which means āto lead astrayā.
We see by Eveās statement that deception has its beginning in the beginning.
So, how and when does it all start in the story of our lives? Is it a learned trait or imprinted by others or possibly by life experience itself. Or, is it inherent in us all, taking itās seat of rule all the way back at the Garden of Eden, deceiving even deception itself.
After all, āIt was just a little white lieā, āWhat they donāt know wonāt hurt themā, āSometimes the truth is just to damagingā, or my all time favorite; āItās all mind over matter, if you donāt mind, it doesnāt matterā
But it does matter! How much? Well letās see what the King has to say about it, the Almighty himself! When something is written in stone it seems to have an air of permanence and prominence about it.
In Exodus 20:16 He tell us āYou shall not give false testimonyā and He repeats it in Deuteronomy 5:20 {written in stone by the way}, and in Exodus 23:1 He tells us āDo not spread false reports. Do not help a wicked man by being a malicious witness. And again in Deuteronomy 19:18-19 He states it this way, āThe judges must make a thorough investigation, and if the witness proves to be a liar, giving false testimony against his brother, then do to him as he intended to do to his brother. You must purge the evil from among you.
Now I donāt know about you, but Iām starting to see a pattern here. And by the way, a good way to separate sound doctrine from tradition, and here is the key, āScripture verifies Scriptureā. The Lord has a tendency to repeat himself when he is trying to make a point. So, if you have a dogma that you are dogmatic about in your dogmatism and you cannot verify it with other scripture it may be for the dogs!
As it is said; a vital key to understanding the written word of God, is to understand specific verses in the context of the rest of the Bible.
The Apostle Paul explains in:
II Peter 1:20-21 (KJV)
Knowing this first, that no prophesy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophesy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
One verse on a subject must be understood in light of other verses on the same subject. Just as in most subjects, knowledge of the Bible is cumulative and must be built by layers of study and insight, bringing us to understanding.
The Prophet Isaiah explains it this way:
Isaiah 28:9-10 (KJV)
Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? Them th...
