Create a winning pitch to raise the capital you need!

You're a young company. You have an idea. You have a dream. Your pitch deck can make or break you!

As someone who has successfully raised capital from a multi-billion dollar corporation, you can trust me when I tell you this: your pitch deck is not something you want to mess around with. A huge percent of the time you invest in putting your business together should be spent on your pitch. My experience with pitching came as part of a startup accelerator. In the program, seven teams went through an intensive business bootcamp where we fine-tuned our businesses and talked to investors. At the end of the program, you pitched your business and hoped someone would make you an offer to invest in your company. There were great companies in the program. In my opinion, all were worthy of an investment. But you know how many got it? Just my team. There's a number of things that went into this, and everything wasn't completely centered around the pitch. But the pitch played a big part of it. So how do you create a pitch-perfect pitch? Let's get started!

The Winning Pitch

I’m going to walk you through our pitch next. Here’s a high-level overview of the company:

We were a marketing CMS for self-published writers. We helped writers manage all of their social networks, discover who was talking about them, and generate content ideas for their website.

Our first slide was pretty simple. It had just our logo and three power words to describe us. If you don’t have power words for your startup, then start brainstorming and make them! If you can’t think of just three words to describe what you do, then you’re not a business yet. You’re a napkin idea that’s not ready for funding.



The next two slides set up a problem in the publishing industry. It showed successful writers; writers that would resonate with the audience (who were publishing experts) because they had each sold over 1,000,000 books. These are all the darlings of the self-publishing world and the writers that every writer “thinks” they can be.

The colors on these slides match the companies branding. And each slide has the company’s logo.





The next four slides show the problem that has been setup: it sucks to be a self-published writer.

In our case, this is what we showed:

Of the 3,000,000 self-published books that come out every year, only 40 writers have ever sold more than 1,000,000 books. The odds of a writer doing it: 0.001333% To make it stick a little more, I explained that was about the same odds as getting struck by lightning.

You have to know what your audience is thinking. At this point, I knew they’d be thinking “well, yeah, only a few have sold a million, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make a living at this.” And...
