Württemberg war im 19. Jahrhundert eine Hochburg der Homöopathie, die in allen Gesellschaftsschichten von den Arbeitern bis zum Königshaus zahlreiche Anhänger hatte. Ärzte und große Laienverbände wie die Hahnemannia sorgten für Bedarf und Absatz. Trotz Streitigkeiten um das Dispensierrecht etablierten sich seit Ende der 1850er Jahre und bis zum Ersten Weltkrieg in Württemberg rund 40 homöopathische Apotheken und Dispensatorien. Mit dieser institutionellen Verankerung der Homöopathie und der daraus resultierenden guten Versorgungslage mit homöopathischen Arzneimitteln nahm Württemberg eine Sonderstellung gegenüber den anderen deutschen Ländern ein. Mit der Zeit erwarben sich viele Apotheker durch ein breitgefächertes homöopathisches Arzneimittelsortiment ein Unterscheidungsmerkmal zu den allopathischen Apotheken.
