Information

1 Introduction to SAP SuccessFactors Learning

This introductory chapter explains the impact of learning and development within a corporation, introduces SAP SuccessFactors Learning as a comprehensive learning management system, and explains how this module fits into the SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite from a talent management perspective.
A strategic and focused approach to employee learning and development is a critical element of business success. Information is everywhere, and your workforce is bombarded with overwhelming amounts of conflicting material. Corporate learning departments are often tasked with streamlining this information and providing guidance on the skills and knowledge that will make employees successful in their roles. It is their challenge to build learning programs and environments to prepare employees to be competent, proactive, and efficient in the organization.
Learning itself encompasses more than a simple list of courses that are offered. Organizations that embrace learning as a corporate culture go beyond the classroom or online environment. Employees who are encouraged to take risks and adapt to new ways of approaching situations are more likely to make a significant impact on the success of the organization. Progressive companies have started to take a more bottom-up approach to the ownership and assignment of learning, in contrast to traditional models that place the responsibility of content development and assignment solely on the corporate learning department, who then own this mandate throughout the organization.
With traditional and progressive models colliding, learning management systems have evolved from a focus on instructor-led classroom management. They are expanding into the world of asynchronous learning with the invention of e-learning standards such as AICC and SCORM, and even further into more user-centric and collaborative environments. To support the spectrum of delivery from classroom training, which is still relevant today, to new forms of learning, the demands of a learning management system continue to grow.
The comprehensive features and functionality of SAP SuccessFactors Learning will enable you to manage your learning programs and support your overall strategy. In this chapter, we’ll discuss how learning and development fit into an organization’s strategic goals in Section 1.1, how SAP SuccessFactors Learning enables learning delivery, assignment, and record keeping in Section 1.2, and finally, how this module interacts with the rest of the SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite to address this pillar of talent management in Section 1.3.
Note
The SAP SuccessFactors HCM Suite used to be known as SAP SuccessFactors BizX or SAP SuccessFactors Foundations. Though these old product names have been retired by SAP, you might see references to them in menu paths, in old documentation, or in conversations with experienced implementation teams. In this book, we will refer to the entire suite by its current name.

1.1 Impact of Learning and Development

In times of economic pressures and limited resources, learning is often the first department where budgets are reduced. This is often a short-sighted plan since investments in employee development have been shown to help companies stay ahead of their competition. Corporations benefit from the competitive advantages that result from the development of a capable and efficient workforce, such as the following:
  • Streamlined operations
  • Reduced workplace incidents and employer liability
  • Reduced employee turnover
  • Extended competitive intelligence
  • A culture of innovation and risk-taking
  • Transfer of knowledge from retiring workforce to younger generations
  • Minimized regulatory risks such as fines or shutdowns
  • Reduced costly errors
  • Reduced travel costs by implementing online training
  • Reduced onboarding time-to-productivity
External factors such as regulatory or other governing bodies dictate that learning must be delivered on a track in many organizations. In these cases, learning is a must-have and not a nice-to-have. Noncompliance with these regulations can result in costly fines or, in extreme cases, business shut-down—and let’s not forget the risk of accidents, injuries, or loss of life for companies that do not...
