South Austin

This quirky but festive neighborhood – especially along S Congress Ave – is the city's soul. Tourism types nicknamed it SoCo, which has somewhat stuck, but locals mostly call it South Congress. The road is the main thoroughfare through the neighborhood and the epicenter of the action; most of the rest is residential, although burgeoning S 1st St has been been seeing more commercial activity in recent years.

The Sights in a Day

MSavor a croissant and Vietnamese coffee at Elizabeth Street Cafe. Check out the nearby murals then head to Zilker Park for an invigorating dip in spring-fed Barton Springs Pool. Not up for a swim? Then check out the animals in the nature & science center or stroll past the statues in the Umlauf Sculpture Garden.
RTake your pick of awesome taco spots for lunch then stroll S Congress Ave to try on cowboy boots at Allens Boots and peruse one-of-a-kind- antiques at Uncommon Objects. Take a coffee break at Jo's Coffee and take the obligatory snap in front of the I Love You So Much mural on the side of the building. Cocktails on the patio of the adjacent Hotel San José are a pleasant respite too.
NJoin the line for a topping-slathered burger at Hopdoddy Burger Bar then choose your evening entertainment: live music at the Continental Club across the street from Jo's, or take a short drive to the Broken Spoke for two-stepping to live Texas country tunes.
