Explore Downtown Kyoto
Downtown Kyoto is bounded by the Kamo-gawa (the river) to the east, Karasuma-dĹri to the west, Oike-dĹri to the north and ShijĹ-dĹri to the south. In this relatively small square area, you will find the thickest selection of restaurants, shops, hotels and businesses in all of Kyoto.
The main streets of ShijĹ and Kawaramachi hold some of the best department stores and a few eating options, but youâll also find a huge selection of shops and restaurants in the areaâs four covered shopping streets (known as shĹtengai): SanjĹ (good for restaurants), Teramachi (a mix of art, souvenirs and clothing), ShinkyĹgoku (mostly tacky souvenirs for kids) and Nishiki Market (the cityâs main food market). But donât just explore these main shopping streets: also head into the maze of smaller streets west of Teramachi, where youâll find a great array of interesting boutiques, cafes, a couple of museums and restaurants.
Local Life
AShopping It might be a tourist hotspot but Nishiki Market is still a gourmet food shopping favourite for locals.
