Norrmalm

The modern heart of the city, Norrmalm is where most visits to Stockholm begin: it’s home to the main train and bus stations, Centralstationen and Cityterminalen respectively. It’s also where you’ll find the highest concentration of schmancy retail boutiques, glamorous bars and restaurants, hotels from functional to fabulous, and noteworthy cultural institutions.

The Sights in a Day

MStart your day with a dose of fine art, courtesy of the Nationalmuseum, whose collections include fine art from around Europe as well as a great stash of Scandinavian design objects. Afterwards, get ready for some serious interior-decorating voyeurism with a tour of the Hallwylska Museet, the former home of a wealthy count and countess who collected objets d’art with the intent of eventually displaying them to the public.
RNext up, change centuries with a visit to the very hip Wetterling Gallery. This is where up-and-coming Stockholm artists – painters, photographers and new-media protagonists – strut their stuff.
NWrap up the afternoon at the Medelhavsmuseet, filled with fascinating artefacts and artwork, notably Egyptian lore and ancient Greek and Roman sculpture. There’s a great cafe here if you’re still hungry, or head for the ultimate smörgåsbord dinner at Grands Verandan. Clubby nights await at Café Opera or Berns Salonger.
