Coastal Highway 1

Down south it’s called the ‘PCH,’ or Pacific Coast Hwy, but North Coast locals simply call it Hwy 1. However you label it, get ready for a fabulous coastal drive, which cuts a winding course on isolated cliffs high above the crashing surf. Compared to the famous Big Sur coast, the serpentine stretch of Hwy 1 up the North Coast is more challenging, more remote and seemingly more authentic, passing farms, fishing towns and hidden beaches. Drivers use roadside pullouts to scan the hazy Pacific horizon for migrating whales and explore a coastline dotted with rock formations that are relentlessly pounded by the surf.

Coastal Highway 1 in Two Days
With two days, set your sites on Mendocino, the most picturesque town on this stretch of coast, and home to the iconic Café Beaujolais. Take your time to get here, twisting up Hwy 1 and exploring all the beaches along the way (when it's time to go home, cut over to Hwy 101 for a straight shot home).
Coastal Highway 1 in Four Days
From Mendocino you can really explore some of California's most rugged coastline in depth. Spend half a day at the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens and looking for sea glass at Glass Beach in Fort Bragg. If you plan to take Hwy 1 back south, make time for a bowl of clam chowder at the fish market in Bodega Bay.
