1Ben’s Chili Bowl Taking a seat at this storied spot that has seen the neighborhood through good times and bad, and joining locals to eat half-smokes and gossip over sweet iced tea.
2National Arboretum Walking through wooded groves, meadows and an ethereal garden made out of Capitol pillar ruins.
3Right Proper Brewing Co Feeling the neighborhood vibe at this cheery beery brewery that was once a pool hall where Duke Ellington played.
4Busboys & Poets Discussing politics, browsing books, sipping free-trade coffee and listening to poets spout verse at this bohemian cafe.
5National Museum of Health and Medicine Gawking at Lincoln’s assassination bullet and other macabre exhibits.

Explore Logan Circle, U Street & Columbia Heights

The U St Corridor is the heart of this vast area and a fine spot to begin your explorations. A stroll here rewards with African American historic sights, soul food restaurants, mural-splashed alleys and red-hot music clubs. Spend an afternoon checking it out, or better yet, devote an evening to the nightlife scene.
U St becomes part of the larger Shaw district, which is one of DC’s hottest ’hoods. But it’s not annoyingly trendy. Instead, the breweries, bars and cafes that seem to pop up weekly are local places, where neighbors come to sip among neighbors. Logan Circle is next door and also booming. Walk down 14th St NW and it’s stacked with dapper bars and bistros. An evening spent eating and drinking in the area is a must.
To the north, Columbia Heights is an enclave that mixes Latino immigrants and hipsters. There are no real sights, but the cheap ethnic food and unassuming punk dive bars can occupy many an evening.
